Amboyna with Contrast & Horn Wa Handles
Give your Japanese kitchen knife an individual finish with richly figured Amboyna wood, striking light-and-dark contrast and a naturally patterned horn ferrule. This selection combines warm copper and reddish-brown grain with pale cream and golden areas. Swirls, ripples and small eye-like markings give each handle a different character, while the horn adds its own bands of cream, brown, grey and charcoal.
Choose your exact handle. Every numbered option corresponds to the individual piece in its photograph, in the same order as the gallery. Each handle is sold separately at €69, with one of each available. Select the number and length you prefer; you will receive that photographed handle.
Materials and design
Amboyna with contrast: the appeal of these handles is the detailed wood figure and the way pale and dark areas meet across the surface. Some pieces have a broad light-coloured section; others show mostly deep red-brown grain with a smaller contrasting accent. These patterns continue differently around the sides, so each face has its own appearance.
Horn ferrule: the ferrule is the section at the blade end of the handle. Here, its smooth appearance complements the more intricate wood grain. The ferrules vary from pale cream to dark charcoal, with streaks and transitions that make them as individual as the wooden bodies.
Faceted wa-style form: the flat faces provide clear points of reference in the hand. These are unmounted replacement handles for a compatible concealed-tang knife, where the blade's tang fits inside the handle. They can be considered for a rehandling project or a custom knife build, subject to a proper fit check.

Choosing a length
- 113 mm — Nos. 1–4: the most compact option in this selection. A useful starting point when replacing a shorter wa handle or seeking a compact grip, provided the knife's tang and overall proportions suit it.
- 128 mm — Nos. 5–6: the middle length, giving 15 mm more overall length than the compact options. Compare it with your current handle and preferred grip before choosing.
- 134 mm — No. 7: the longest piece in this batch, 6 mm longer than the 128 mm options. Consider the extra length alongside hand size, blade proportions and the balance you want.
Length alone does not confirm compatibility. Tang length, height and thickness must suit the handle opening and internal insertion depth. Handle width, height and weight also influence comfort and balance. These dimensions and the opening measurements have not been specified for this batch, so a particular knife model cannot be guaranteed to fit from the photographs.
Fitting advice
Professional fitting is recommended. The opening may need careful adjustment, and the correct mounting method depends on the blade and handle construction. Do not force the tang into the handle. These are wa-style handles rather than replacement scales for a Western handle secured with rivets.
Contact Tokushu Knife Malta with your knife's brand, model and blade length for help choosing. If the tang is already exposed, include its measurements and a clear photograph so the fit can be assessed before installation.
Care
- Wipe clean gently by hand and dry promptly, including around the ferrule and blade junction once fitted.
- Do not soak or put the handle in a dishwasher.
- Avoid prolonged heat, sudden temperature changes, harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
- Use only oils or conditioners suitable for the existing wood and horn finish; check compatibility before applying.
- Store in a dry place and avoid leaving the handle standing in water.
Wood and horn are natural materials. Grain and colour vary around each piece, and lighting or screen settings can affect how the colours appear. The numbered photographs show the actual handles offered.
