Japoński nóż składany cierny Higonokami ze stali węglowej

Overview

The Nagao Kanekoma Higonokami is one of Japan’s most iconic folding knives: a minimalist friction-folder with roots dating back to the late 19th century. These knives are made by Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho in Miki City, Hyōgo, the last remaining workshop legally permitted to use the registered “Higonokami / 肥後守定駒” name. This is the real thing—traditional, practical, and deeply collectible.

Across the Medium and Large sizes, the formula stays true to the classic Higonokami design: a laminated SK carbon-steel blade, a simple steel handle in a silver or black finish, and the signature chikiri lever for easy opening. Choose Medium - Silver, Medium - Black, Large - Black, or Large Silver. The Large Silver has the same specifications as the Large - Black, with a silver handle finish. Whether you want a compact everyday carry, a balanced all-around utility knife, or a larger pocket tool with more cutting length, this lineup offers an authentic Japanese folding knife for every preference.

Size Comparison

Medium - Silver is the lightest and most compact option in this lineup. Medium - Black offers the same 70 mm blade length with a slightly longer closed length and more weight. Both Large - Black and Large Silver offer a 90 mm blade and a fuller grip for users who want extra reach while keeping the slim traditional profile. The two Large options share the same measurements and differ in handle finish.

Common Questions

Q: Which size Higonokami should I choose?

A: Choose Medium - Silver for the lightest, most compact everyday carry, or Medium - Black for the same 70 mm blade length with a slightly longer closed length and more weight. Choose Large - Black or Large Silver if you want a more substantial Higonokami with extra reach for food prep, workshop tasks, or general utility cutting. Both Large options have the same specifications, so choose the handle finish you prefer.

Q: Is this a locking knife?

A: No. The Higonokami is a traditional friction-folder, which means it does not use a modern lock. It stays open through hand pressure and the simple brilliance of its chikiri lever design. That simplicity is a big part of its charm and historical appeal.

Q: Is SK carbon steel good for everyday use?

A: Yes. SK carbon steel takes a keen edge easily and is straightforward to maintain, which is one reason the Higonokami remains so beloved. Like other carbon steels, it will patina with use and can rust if neglected, so wipe it dry after cutting and store it clean.

Q: How do I care for a carbon-steel Higonokami?

A: Wipe it dry after use, especially after cutting anything acidic or damp. A light coat of Tsubaki Oil is an easy way to protect the blade during storage. For day-to-day edge maintenance, a few light passes on our Tokushu XL Buffalo Leather Strop will help keep the edge crisp.

Q: What makes Nagao Kanekoma special?

A: Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho is widely recognized as the last remaining maker legally permitted to use the registered Higonokami name. That makes these knives more than just useful tools—they are a direct continuation of a historic Japanese knife tradition.

Care

This knife uses traditional carbon steel, so it will naturally darken and develop patina over time. That is normal and often desirable. To prevent rust, wipe the blade dry after use and apply a small amount of oil before storage when needed. A leather strop is an excellent way to maintain the edge between sharpenings.

Why We Love It

The Higonokami is proof that a pocket knife does not need springs, locks, or complicated hardware to be deeply useful. It is slim, tactile, easy to carry, and rich with Japanese history. Medium or Large, the Nagao Kanekoma Higonokami delivers authentic craftsmanship and a kind of everyday satisfaction that modern folders rarely match.
