A leather strop helps refine and realign a knife edge between full sharpening sessions. Regular light stropping can restore cutting bite, remove a fine burr after sharpening, and reduce how often a knife needs to return to the whetstones.

How to use a strop

  • Place the strop on a stable surface.
  • Move the knife spine-first, away from the cutting edge.
  • Use very light pressure and alternate sides.
  • Do not push the edge forward into the leather.

A strop can be used clean or with a compatible polishing compound. Avoid excessive pressure or an angle that is much higher than the sharpening angle, as this can round the edge.
